Memories + Photos + All the Things of 2017

*in announcer voice* Well, folks, it’s that time again- Christmas is over, the New Year has almost arrived, and *voice cracks* I’m starting to get panicky and wonder how time passed by so quickly. Not to mention clingy- I don’t like releasing my grip on years. But, I’m I’ll be feeling the same way next year when 2018 is coming to its close. Seriously, I have a love hate relationship with new years.

So, to end 2017, here’s a wrap up post for you! I guess it’ll be a messy mish-mash of everything. This will also be my last post on this blog- I’ll talk more about that at the end.

I’m not gonna lie- this has been a rough year. A lot has gone on, and if I had to use a word to describe 2017, sadly, I would have to say stress. But I also have so many good memories, and I think it’s best to focus on those going into the new year. First off, here are some big things that happened this year writing and blogging wise:

  • In January, one of my resolutions was to get serious about finishing and publishing my book. So, (not necessarily the most efficient and correct way) I started editing chapter by chapter.
  • In February, I started this blog as well as my writing Instagram @rileyalinewrites . Meeting all of you, my lovely writer friends, was seriously the greatest thing ever. And I wish I had earlier. I’ve met so many other teen authors and bloggers. I never dreamed there could be so many of us, and it’s kind of amazing. I’m so thankful for all of you!
  • I sent my manuscript off to beta readers in May. . .for the first time. . .ever.
  • Not long after that (due to my being a complete newbie and being stubbornly set in my goal), I published my first novella, Daisy (The Homeschool Kids), on July 16th. I was seriously soooo excited! I’m sure a lot of you can relate to how amazing the feeling of holding your words, bled onto paper and crafted into book form, in your hands is. And in case you can’t, it’s kind of amazing. (Thank you to Audrey Caylin, for complete freaking out and virtually squealing with me minutes after it was published!)
  • Oh, and then August came. And then I actually learned how to write? Yeah, go ahead, put the pieces together in your mind. Publishing a book the month before, and then getting the brilliant idea to actually learn how to write one? *sarcasm drips from lips* Yeah, go Riley, that was a terrific move on your part xD.
  • I started writing the first draft for the next book in my series, Will, in September (after learning about outlining and story structure and character arc). I also autographed my first book. . .and have signed several more since then. . .*dies*
  • Annnnnd, of course, in November, one of my favorite things happened. NaNoWriMo. It was my first year to participate, and I won! *fist pump* And I was really happy with my novel. It’s the first in a *maybe* trilogy that I’m writing. I was seriously excited about my progress.
  • December, I basically did nothing at all edited on my NaNoWriMo novel a little bit, started outlining the next book in the series slightly, and in no way got done the reading I said I was going to get done this month.

So, to sum that up, I started my blog, published my novella, and won NaNoWriMo. I’d say it was a pretty good writing year.

But of course, if writing was the only thing I did all year, what would that make me?? A hermit, you say? *nervous laugh* That’s not me. . .*coughs*. . .at all.

So, here are some memories (and non writing related things) from 2017.

  • We did a 50’s themed Valentine’s Banquet at my church as a fundraiser, and despite my so called “Maleficent hair” and the weird dances, it was seriously a lot of fun.
  • I GOT TO SEE CHRIS TOMLIN AND CASTING CROWNS IN CONCERT. Like. *tries to breathe* Casting Crowns. GUYYYYYS. I love them soooo much.
  • Cannot forget the day that “will forever be remembered as the day, that I was almost burnt, by Captain Jack Sparrow.” Don’t let that fool you, it was the coolest day ever.
  • I got to teach the kindergarten class for VBS with my best friend! I love kids so much, and yes, there were the trouble makers, but my goodness. Working with them was one of the neatest things I’ve ever gotten to do. It was a lot of fun. Oh, and we also did a skit for VBS in which, I got a black eye and wore it around all day. I got some looks from the older ladies. They be like “um you ok?”
  • I turned 16. #insane
  • I got to see a symphony orchestra perform the Star Wars score! Sure, it was wet, and muddy, and my shoes got completely ruined, but. *inhales* *exhales* WOW. And dudes. They had delicious egg rolls.
  • A friend of mine from where I used to live got to come and stay with me for a few days. It had been forever since I’d last seen her!! Indecisive as we both were, I think we both had a good time.
  • I got to start playing basketball, which was the best, because that’s one of my fondest memories from my old home. Plus, I’ve been able to meet more homeschoolers my age. *could probably do it, but decides against promoting my own homeschool book because I’m way too introverted*
  • Thanksgiving! And basically November, which kicked off my favorite time of year. I just love November, and Thanksgiving, and everything in between then and Christmas. But now I’m going to cry because it’s almost over and I have to face the new year.
  • ALSO I STINKING SAW TIM HAWKINS LIVE OH MY WORD. I laughed wayyyyy too much. If you have not heard of him and want to laugh until your sides hurt GO LOOK HIM UP.
  • And of course, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. (Guys, let me know your thoughts in the comments. Honestly, I could do a whole separate post on that, but I won’t do that to you guys 🙂 ) But, my famous (not so famous) on liner is “It was a lot better than 7.” I wasn’t really a fan of 7. I was pretty disappointed, actually. Eight did kind of redeem it in a lot of ways, but there were still things I was bummed about. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it. It was a pretty good movie, though.
  • CHRISTMAS. I just love everything surrounding Christmas. And as sad as I am that it came and went so quickly, I enjoyed the weekend. Especially Christmas Eve, because I’d been sick a lot the week previous, and so being back in church, and seeing everybody was great. And of course, the Candlelight service (in which, every year, I stress over having to hold fire. My ten year old sister (and I repeat, my ten year old sister) had to look over at me several times and mouth “are you ok?” And Christmas day was great. I never can fall asleep the night previously, so it was funny that I *thought* I’d drifted off (and was proud of myself) after going to bed at twelve. But when I woke up again, shocked that I’d actually fallen asleep, I asked my brother what the time was. Two thirty ish? Ah. Ok. Nevermind. Anyway, so my dad actually had to get us up? You know, because it’s normally the other way around? Especially when you have little siblings. We ate breakfast that mom had gotten up and fixed, waiting for us to get up, and then we opened gifts. AND GUYYYYYS. I FINALLY GOT THE OUT OF TIME TRILOGY!!!! *dies*

Guys, it is so hard to compile a small list of highlights. Like, a whole year has kind of gone by???? Wow, it’s insane.

Here’s a quick photo dump for you:

Also, a couple of posts from my blog to check out:

Now, for an announcement! As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, this will be the last post on this blog. I’m moving over to my own domain, rileyaline.com. Aside from having my own domain, it was a good time to make it more my own, and have a theme. So, go follow me there, and sign up for email updates. I’ll be doing a series for the new year starting January 6th, so check that out! I’ve got a few people helping me out with a blog launch over that weekend as well. You can follow my Instagram @rileyalinewrites for updates. 😉

Guys, it’s been a crazy year, but it’s been a good year. God has been good this year. He’s still good no matter what you’re going through. I know I certainly need Him going into this New Year. I’ll be praying for all of you awesome writers, bloggers, and readers. I hope you have a great rest of 2017, and I’ll see you in 2018!!

Let’s talk! Tell me about your year! What were some highlights? What are you looking forward to in 2018?

  1. AAAHHH OMW YOUR YEAR SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS SO AMAZING. And PUBLISHING your book ?!? I totally remember that night when we were just virtually screaming back and forth. It was the best xD

I haven’t seen Star Wars yet, but I’m going on Tuesday. I hear that it’s definitely better than 7, which I really hope is true (7 was kinda…lame, I think 😛 )

I think the biggest thing I’m looking forward to in 2018 is that I don’t know what’s going to happen. Seriously. Like, my family might be moving, and we might not, and I might be going to Realm Makers, but I might not, and I might be able to finish the new draft of Found, but I might not…it’s gonna be crazy!

I hope you have an awesome New Years! ❤ (now to go check out your new blog 😀 )

It was definitely better than 7 (I totally feel the same way!), but I was disappointed. I hope y’all enjoy it!!

Wow! Like, majorly move? Or just move houses…? And I totally hope you can go to Realm Makers! It’s sounding like a yes for me, so I’m excited. Oooo, is Found working out for you?? I totally hope you finish it, girl!

Thank you, Audrey! I hope you have a great New Years, too!💙💙 (yay😆)

      1. Well, we don’t really know yet 😛 Maybe major move (back to where we used to live), or maybe like…across the country move. It’s crazy not knowing but I’ll let you know when it’s figured out xD

Aaaaah, that’s so awesome! You’re going to have a blast 😀

(and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new blog! <33)

  2. AHHH you’ve done so much this year, Riley! I think you need to take a giant breather, now. o.o I’m so happy that you’ve enjoyed blogging and you’ve come such a far way for only sticking with it a year! (I say “only,” but yet a year is a long time. :P)

And I stalked your comments above with Audrey, and you might be going to Realm Makers?! I’m planning to go this year, so it’d be really awesome to meet you and squeal in person!! 😀

    1. I’m definitely taking a break from (working towards) publishing, but I still have a lot of writing goals! Haha, thank you!

Yes!! I’m 90% sure I’m going. Unless something comes up, I’ll hopefully be there. I’m so excited😆 It’d be so awesome to meet you! Yes!
